Doug Wilhelm visits GM 7th graders

"You guys matter," Doug Wilhem told 7th grade readers. Young adult books are the biggest money makers at this moment, and Wilhelm listed examples such as Twilight,Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games.  He went on to say that it is a challenging audience to write for.  Teenagers will put down a book if it is not interesting right away.  Wilhelm knows that he has to grab his audience and make connections with them from the first few pages.

Having read Wilhelm's book The Revealers, GM students had the opportunity to ask the author questions.  Wilhelm responded with candor about his own experience as a middle school student and with bullies.  He also shared a notebook he uses to jot down ideas for future books.  He writes down things he hears students say, t-shirt slogans he sees, even the shoes a kid is wearing. Wilhelm says, "you can make up a whole character out of a few details."

Special thanks to the Green Mountain Author Series for bringing Doug Wilhelm, Sharon Jonynas for hosting the event, and Brianna Luman for introducing the author.  The Green Mountain Author Series is funded by the Chester Academy.
